What about Marchand?
He has not showed up for two post seasons. And I think they should look to trade him.
Bergy needs a more consistent goal scorer, preferably someone with speed on his wing.

I'm so pissed at the first line.....so very pissed.

And we could plug a speedster on the wing with the swedes. That would mean Kelly may need to go.

But if we want to add speed we are going to need to replace some players.

Thorton seems obvious and I believe that his B.S. hurt us with P.K. What an bumhole.

And the Edler trade rumors had me excited during the deadline. And clearly we could have used him.

Chara is in the twilight of his career and should be playing 20 mins a game, MAX. So we need another D man to pair with Dougie and eat big minutes.

Chara reminds me of Pronger with the Flyers!!!!

I don't think these team needs a major overhaul, but they do need to do some tinkering in key spots. A quality top 4 defender under the age of 30 would be at the top of my list. Chara will be another year older and Seidenberg isn't a spring chicken either, so an established younger player with top 4 potential should be a priority.

I think the Merlot has finally spoiled. Shawn Thornton needs to be shown the door, its clear that his skill set will soon be extinct. The Habs 4th line really put a beating on the Bruins 4th line. They need to get younger and more versatile on that line. They have plenty of options in Providence to fill that void, Florek and Lindblad come to mind. Thornton was a great Bruins, but it's a business and they can't be hanging on to guys for sentimental value.

My final point is to think about potentially shaking up the top 6 and bringing in a more skilled offensive minded winger. Through free agency they could consider Hemsky, Gaborik, or Vanek, depending in the money they will command. Through trade I would send feelers out on what the return could be for Marchand.

I just find it odd that they traded Seguin because they weren't going to wait around for him to mature and they were in a win now mode. Well, they didn't win and another year is shaved off the window of opportunity.

Seems unlikely to me that the B's can afford Z, Seids, JB, Dougie AND another 2/3 guy like Edler or Ehrhoff (who I really hope they stay clear of). If you bring in another guy of that ilk, IMO you're saying so long to JB and McQuaid.

I think you have to get younger in the top 4. As tough as it is to do, I would dangle Boychuk for an upgrade. You're not going to move Dougie, Chara, or Seidenberg.

I think if Boston had a healthy Seidenberg in the lineup they would have beat the Habs. Losing a guy like that, a minute eating top pair dman, is a lot to overcome.

Agreed, Seidenberg and Kelly would have put us past Montreal and most likely back into the cup.

No kidding. TSN suggested today that Boston has approx a 4.5 mill cap penalty for next season as well

You know who's scored 2 goals in his last 28 playoff games? Tyler Seguin.

Missing Seguin wasn't the problem. Quite honestly I don't think there is a problem. Despite playing like garbage they were 1 fortunate bounce away from ending this series in 5. Sometimes teams don't play as well as they can. This is one of those times. It's not as though they were firing on all cylinders and Habs blew past them. Games 6 & 7 were 2 of their worst performances of the season. If they'd played like they did in Games 1 or 5, there isn't a conversation to be had.

Thornton goes, bring Iggy back if you can on the cheap. If you want to shake it up, move 63.

I firmly believe Spooner will not play for the Bruins full time. No room at Center and he's not the same player on the wing. Move him for a similar asset that fits a need.

If a guy like Edler is a target, I strongly think about moving JB to Edmonton in a package for a young forward.

Yep, which is why I'd think they'll try to re-up Iggy on a similar 1 year deal (hopefully for less total $), defer some salary again.

I think you could build a package with Boychuk+ to get Eberle and then a separate package built around Marchand for a Top 4 defenseman.

Lucic/Krejci/Eberle
Smith/Bergeron/Iginla
Eriksson/One Eyed Swede/Kelly

That's a pretty good top 9

Highly unlikely but would be pretty cool

With Savard on LTIR they are gonna have about 13 mill for 7 players. 2 of which are Krug and Smith.
Those 2 are probably gonna get close to 8 mill combined. 4.5 for Krug(Voynov, Josi) and 3.5 for Smith
Leaving them 5 mill to sign 5 players and league min jumps to 750k

I think its $5.8 mil in cap penalty

$4.2 mil bonuses for Iginla
$800k in bonuses for Krug
$850k in bonuses for Hamilton

Which is exactly why there is a real possibility of Marchand and a few other players to be sent packing. Although I think Smith can be had for around $2.5M and Krug $3-3.5M

Comp for 3.5 is a 2nd rounder. Every team would throw that offersheet. And I think Krug is better then the comparable I mentioned

There is still time to get a deal done with both Krug and Smith before they hit the RFA market.

Good write up TY.

You guys don't want Hoff. He doesn't embody what the bruins are and only gives about 82%. Its not the first team he's done this on. He's the D-man we are least excited about. And that's saying a lot.
